Contaminated Pet Food

Petco was on the local ABC news (South Bend, Indiana) for having stored pet foods in warehouses with unsanitary conditions. If you purchased any pet food recently at Petco stores in the Michiana area (including their store in Grainer, Indiana), they are recommending you not use the food due to contamination with rodent feces. And to make sure you wash your hands if you've handled the packages. As of 11pm Eastern, 6/20/08 there was no mention of this on the Petco website.

The warehouse is located in Joliet, Illinois, and supplies pet food to stores in Illinois, Alabama, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin.

  3. We don't have a Petco here close. Unfortunately this could happen anywhere. I hope it is quickly sorted out and no animals (or humans) are hurt along the way. Thanks for passing it along, Mo!

  6. I agree with Daisy. Pet food deserves the same quality control as human food. (though quality of human food is pretty debatable right now too) Thanks for letting us know about this NTM. Rat poo...yuck!

  7. Hi Mo,
Thanks so much for posting this. I buy my purries their food at Meijer's. I agree with Lorianna, pet food deserves the same handling and treatment as human food.

These contamination issues seem to come up a lot lately. (tomatoes and samonella, etc.) As a vegetarian, if this continues, I'm gonna run out of things to eat pretty soon!

  8. Thankfully mum does not buy my food there. Sometime she goes there to look for toys or litter stuff. But not food. Actually they don't carry my food, mum gets it at the regular grocery shopping place.

  9. Actually it isn't the food that is the problem as much as the OUTSIDE of the packages are icky. But by handling the package then you would contaminate the food.

  10. My mom's brother lives in Indiana and he has 6 cats - we'd better make sure he knows!

  11. My Himalayan cat Teddy was perfectly healthy until I received and feed him from a June 2008 order of food from the Petco Joliet, IL facility. Teddy is now dead. The collective efforts of four different vets could not save him. I agree that it was not the food but rather the contaminated containers that poisoned him. This is devastating and never should have happene!
