Spooker Treats

Since Spooker has recovered from almost leaving us over the holidays, she has an appetite again.  I am so thankful for this.  I try to give her a bit of extra food that the other Purries don't get every night, and each time I go into the bedroom, she gets up off her heated bed (which is next to my pillow) and she begs for a treat.  I give her a Temptation each time, and then she goes down the steps from the bed to her water bowl and drinks.  Since this act involves some exercise for her, and hydration, I can't feel too bad about the extra treats.  I'm guessing about four to five extra treats per day, in addition to what she gets at our regular treats time.
I've tried more healthy treats for her than Temptations, but she won't eat them.  Chloe loved the treats-trial phase, because inevitably she was the one getting the spurned-by-Spooker treats.  I know that Temptations are probably like human candy, but for a cat her age, does it really matter how many she gets?
A cat age calculator I found online compares a cat her age to a 92 year old human.  If I live to be 92, I better damn well be able to eat as many Reese's peanut butter cups I want every day!  So I don't really worry too much about giving her what she wants.  I mean, every day with her is a gift, so why not treat her like she wants, right?

  1. we agree - treats at this point should be the last thing you worry about. I (the mom) remember when my grandmother turned 92. Her doctor said that her cholestoral was high among other things and wanted to restrict certain things - my dad and his sister told the doctor to stuff it....the things she wanted weren't going to be the end of her - and shouldn't we all be able to enjoy those last lazy days with certain treats?? Spoil her rotten...

  3. Way to go, Spooker! We agree, if she's 92, he should be able to eat whatever she darned well pleases. And if it's the kitty equivalent of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, so be it! :)

  4. Yah, you get to that age, you should be able to eat what you want. Grampie's doc wouldn't even test his cholesterol and such. Eat and enjoy your life at that age.

  5. We're with the rest of the kitties -- if Spooker wants kittie crack, tuna, or a hamm a day, keep it coming as long as you can afford it. At her age, every day is her burthday.

Same with me. I'm 12, FIV+, and have an extra small heart and chronic sinus issues. I almost couldn't fight off the tooth infection last year, but I made it. Now I get all the Temptations I want and everybody's extra food cuz I don't really keep weight on very well. Old age has its privileges!

  10. If she likes her treats, by all means feed her treats! :) When you get older, you should be able to enjoy all the joys and treats in life without feeling one bit guilty about it. Feed her a treat for us, ok? :)

  13. If she likes treats, then treats it is! Quality of life is what it's all about when you're a frail senior.

  14. it should not matter what the treats are, only that she's eating something!

  19. I'd do the same thing. That treat makes Spooker happy and she is not eating actual human candy :-)

  20. Absolutely agree. When the kitties who are no longer with us were getting on in age, the human ramped up the spoiling big time. It was only right and we're all happy she did. Actually, didn't realize we could be loved and spoiled any more than we are already! Spooker, what a brave kitty you are!
