This information is from the Humane Society Of The United States:
Everyone who shares a home with a cat should have on hand a basic feline first-aid kit.
- A good pet first-aid book (here's a link to one)
- Phone Numbers:
- Veterinarian
- The nearest emergency veterinary clinic
- A poison-control center or hotline
- Paperwork:
- Proof of rabies vaccination status
- Copies of other important medical records
- Rectal thermometer (your cat's temperature should not rise above 103°F or fall below 100°F)
- Sterile gauze rolls and pads for bandages
- Adhesive tape
- Hydrogen peroxide
- Tweezers
- Petroleum jelly
- Antiseptic lotion, powder, or spray
- A pillowcase to confine your cat for treatment
- A carrier for each pet
- Cotton balls or swabs
- Splints and tongue depressors
- Towels
- A muzzle or strips of cotton to prevent biting
- Penlight or flashlight
- Scissors
- Needle-nosed pliers
- Ice pack
- Plastic eyedropper or syringe
- Sterile saline solution
- Latex gloves
- Ear-cleaning solution
- Nail clippers
We also think a good Emergency Evacuation Kit and Plan for your felines is a good idea. What would you do if you had only 5 minutes to evacuate your home? Spooker, Daphne & Chloe would take longer than 5 minutes to wrangle, I'd imagine! But regardless, I need to get an evacuation kit ready. We have a railway track within 5 miles of our home, and there is a nuclear power plant within 30 miles. Plus, we live in a tornado region. And earthquakes can happen anywhere, not just California. While we're pretty sure we're far enough inland from hurricanes, anything can happen, and we need to be better prepared. Bottled water, dry food in airtight/waterproof containers, and food/water dishes are just the beginnings. Chloe says, "There'd darn well better be Temptations in there, too, mister!"
We've read that you should have a backpack style emergency kit for your pet, so you can grab it and go. Adding your pet's first aid kit to the backpack sounds like a good idea, too.
We hope you never have to use either - but better safe than sorry, my grammy always said.
cheers,
Not The Mama

I don't have a kitty anymore but maybe I should think on a "doggie emergency kit"
ReplyDeletepets to the kitties. :-)
That is some very good advice! Except for the rectal thermometer part. Do you mind if I hide that part of the kit? Because I don't want my temperature taken.
ReplyDeleteExcellent advice. We have to take care of our babies, because they so depend on us. Have a great MM. :)
ReplyDeleteReally....I never knew about the temperature. No wonder they're like little water bottles in the winter!
ReplyDeleteWe have cat food along with the human rations so there's no "extra." The cats are going if we have to go in an emergency, so it's all there... Along with some of those paper litterboxes!
ReplyDeletePurrhaps y'all could go visit my friend. She lost her fur baby today, and she's very sad.
ReplyDeleteCheck here for details.
Goodbye, Sweet Girl
That is a truly useful list. I've always kept some of those things on hand, but nothing a comprehensive as this.
ReplyDeleteOh Thank you, this is some good information that everyone should have. I will pass this on to my Mum.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea. My sister bought one of those pre-made 72 hour kits for us humans, someone should make kits for cats, dogs, etc. Remember all those poor abandoned pets from Katrina?
ReplyDeleteI agree with the BEAUTIFUL Chloe that temptations must be included in the evacuation kit. It's a must.
ReplyDeleteyup. the Lady's been talking 'bout gettin' that stuff togeffur but she hazzn't dun it yet. when she gets plastick gallon bottles of water fur keepin' in case of 'mergincee, i puts the bitey on 'em an the water leeks onta the floor.
ReplyDeleteCocoa
I have both of those for my very own! Mommy keeps them in the basement under the stairs where we'd hide in case a tornado takes the house away. We got our info from the HSUS too. Great public service announcement!
ReplyDeleteAll beans should at least keep one pair of shoes and a change of clothes in an evacuation kit just in case.
I don't have a pet kit or a people kit... YIKES!
ReplyDeleteHappy MM!
well i just came from lois's and she has five hundred bucks in hers but at least you have the rectal thermometer. i think i'll go with her if you don't mind! ha ha
ReplyDeletesmiles, bee
I'm with you, Bee!!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat about a stiptic pen or powder?
I have to keep one handy in case the birds break a blood feather. They can bleed to death!
Also, I was trimming Zoe's toenails and she jerked, I clipped, and she bled like mad! I couldn't find the stiptic and had to call hubman home from work to stop at PetSmart and bring one home, while applying pressure. Scary!
Great idea NTM! Did you know that you can take Pet Emergency First Aid courses from the American Red Cross?
ReplyDeleteLuf, Us
We are so happy that you posted this because our Food Lady hadn't thought of any of this...
